Obituary for Raymond W. Svoboda

Raymond W. Svoboda, age 84, of Edwardsville, passed away Friday, July 28, 2017 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton. He was born July 21, 1933 in Ft. Russell Township, IL, the son of the late William T. and Irma R. (Frey) Svoboda. He married Betty M. Boeser September 3, 1960 in Highland. She survives.

Besides his wife, Ray is survived by five children: Laurie (David) Raymond of Alhambra, IL, Raymond J. (Regina) Svoboda of Edwardsville, Janice M. (Scott) Abbott of Sorento, IL, MIchael Svoboda of Worden, IL and Paul (Denise) Svoboda of Edwardsvile; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters: Shirley (Bill) Lanham of Edwardsville, Rosemary Dettmer of Edwardsville and Bernardine Wickenhauser of Godfrey.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Delores Kronable; and five brothers-in-law: Gene Kronable, Royce Dettmer, Ken Wickenhauser, David E. Boeser and Richard Markus.

Raymond was a life-long farmer, a US Army veteran and a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville. He enjoyed woodworking, his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville. A funeral mass of resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 3, 2017 at the church with the Very Reverend Jeffrey Goeckner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Boniface Building Fund or to the St. Boniface School Angel Fund.
