Words of Encouragement
As my good friend and mentor, this little memory fulfills the essance of the selfless and encouraging individual John was. When I was the coach of the O'fallon High School Hockey Team, the junior varsity coach had quit and walked off on the team. John approached me in private and told me that all of the boys on the JV squad looked up to me as he felt I could aspire and make them feel special and worth while spending the time to coach and teach them how to act and play the game with poise and dignity. He told me, after I coached them to the JV MCVHA Championship, that I possessed a special talent that (removed individual apprehension and poor self-concept) and provided the boys identidity and the ability to transcend and be the best they could be. John was my inspiration that impressed on me that the way I coached "made a difference." Nobody else ever said that of me. Even when I coach the first junior Olympic Hockey in National competiton, John and his words of encouragement were with me - and they always will be.
