Obituary for Eugene "Gene" Hilmes

Eugene "Gene"  Hilmes
Eugene (Gene) Hilmes, 81 of Germantown, died at his home on Sunday April 19, 2015
He was born Oct 24, 1933 in Germantown, the son of Aloys and Frances (Kniepmann) Hilmes.
He married the former Marita (Wobbe) Dierkes on Aug 2, 1974 at St. Boniface Church in Germantown.
Gene graduated from Aviston High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict from 1961 to 1963.
Gene worked at McDonald Douglas in St Louis. He later retired after 38 years from Kuhn Lumber in Lebanon, formerly located in Trenton. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, attending their sports activities, playing golf, and traveling, especially during spring time in Florida. In years prior, he also belonged to the Germantown Boomkessel Band as a washboard player.
Gene was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Germantown American Legion and Bent Oak Golf Course in Breese. He was an original member of the Germantown Community Development Organization.
He is survived by his wife Marita; two step children: Bruce (Kathy) Dierkes, and Kimberly (Keith) Hemker; five grandchildren: Lauren (Brad) Essenpreis, Brett (special friend Ariel Strieker) Dierkes, Jordan Nordike, Rebecca (special friend Brannon Young) Hemker, and Mariah Hemker; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jerry & Mary Ann Wobbe, and Jim & Kathie Heimann, John & Carolyn Santel, Stanley & Janet Bach, Steve & Pat Reed, Leroy & Phyllis Dierkes, Menard & Shirley Etter, Charles & Diane Albers, Jo Ann Sellers, and Kathy Rakers. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aloys and Frances Hilmes; mother-in-law and father-in-law Joe & Fern Wobbe; sister and brother-in-law Marcella & Fred Korte; a brother and sister-in-law Ray and Anita Hilmes; and by two by brothers-in-law: Rich Sellers and Joe Rakers.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2015 and from 9-10:45 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 2015 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Germantown. A Mass of Resurrection will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 2015 at the church with Rev. James Buerster, pastor, officiating.
Full Military Honors will be held at St Boniface Catholic Church immediately following the service.
Memorials may be made to HOSPICE of Southern Illinois or Donors Choice and will be received at the Church.
