John Johnson, age 73, of New Athens, died at 12:32 p.m,. Monday, August 4, 2014 at his son's residence in Aviston, IL. He was born June 17, 1941 in Waterbury, CT, the son of the late Raymond and Eleanor Morris (nee Harris) Johnson.

Surviving are his former wife, Jeri (nee Helwig) Hohrein of Belleville; two sons: Scott (Jenny) Johnson of Aviston and David (Stacy) Johnson of O'Fallon, IL; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Sandra Allen; and one brother, Barry Morris, both of Clinton, CT.

He was preceded in death by a son, Curt Maxwell; a stepson, Fred Tonneas; and two wives: Toni (nee Cowell) and Marilyn Kimme.

Mr. Johnson was retired from the St. Clair County Highway Garage as a supervisor. He was also a veteran of the US Army. He enjoyed fishing and was an excellent marksman with an emphasis on pre-1890 firearms. He enjoyed the outdoors day and night and was a wood worker of furniture and crafts. He also had an admiration for antique cars. He enjoyed his granddaughters' visits and teaching his grandsons to shoot.

Services will be private. Memorial contributions may be given to West County
Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis, MO or to Vitas Hospice.
