Obituary for David W. Black

David W.  Black
David W. Black, age 44, of Alton, died at 4:41 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at his residence. He was born February 15, 1970 in Pasadena, TX, the son of Barry Black of Texas, and the late Victoria Tonkinson. Besides his father, he is survived by a step mother, Carol Black and two children: Sierra Black and Lars Black of Alton; his fiance, Kim Bartholomew of Alton; one brother, Dan Black of Alton and a half-sister, Amy Dosen-Black Smith of Arlington, VA.

Mr. Black received a bachelor's degree in Special Education from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He authored four novels: Dream Warriors, Baptists Gone Wild, Dichotomy and Zero Main Street; and was a guest author for the Alton Telegraph and numerous running publications. He was a Union Organizer and a member of Unite Here local 74. He was also an active member of the Try Club in East Alton and was a member of MENSA. David volunteered at Community Hope Center, and volunteered every Thanksgiving to feed those in need. David also raised money for other individuals fighting cancer with his friends from Epic Coffee Time.

After cremation, his remains will be scattered in a private ceremony. A public memorial service will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Riverbender Community Center, 200 W. Third St. in Alton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to David Black’s memorial fund at Liberty Bank in Alton.
